Local Authorities
In 2008, Sport Wales through the work of its Welsh Language Development Officer initiated 3 pilot projects in partnership with Ceredigion, Rhondda Cynon Taff and Conwy Councils.
Though quite diverse in their nature the main theme of the work with Local Authorities has been to identify any opportunities to enhance what is currently provided or address any gaps in what is offered in Welsh by the three authorities. In essence to provide local solutions for local needs and to learn any lessons which might assist other agencies to meet demands for Welsh language sports provision in the future.
The aim of the programme is to trial intervention strategies aimed to either improve upon current provision or cater for any identified unmet demand. Each project is designed to work in such a way as to be sustainable at the conclusion of the pilot.
At a local level it is intended to create a collaborative approach by working with Welsh language organisations utilising the available local expertise and resource of Welsh language agencies such as the Urdd or Mentrau Iaith to support and work in partnership with Local Authority staff. Where applicable it is planned to engage with local universities to work with and utilise the potential Welsh language coach/volunteer student workforce available.
Now in the second year a further three local authorities will become partners and the localised Welsh language sport development needs addressed. The areas are still to be confirmed for 2009/2010.
