ABERGAVENNY TENNIS CLUB REACHES OUT
28 Jun 2007
National Association for Mental Health (MIND) Project
Launched with a £700 Community Chest grant from the Sports Council for Wales in 2005, the club coaches up to six participants from a local MIND centre each week, led by Assistant Coach, Arthur Hales.
Communities First Project
With a grant from the Wales Council for Voluntary Action, free coaching is offered to school children aged between 9 and 10 at the local primary school, Deri View. Talented pupils have also progressed through the ‘Acorn Club’, run as an after-school activity on a pay and play basis, with free membership and play tokens. Aside from teaching the children, leaders Mike Buck, Arthur Hales and Sean Jones offer Key Stage 1 and 2 training for teaching staff.
Primary Schools Tennis Development Project
The club has plans to actively encourage local primary children to participate in Mini Tennis competitions by providing four coach-led taster sessions in each of Abergavenny’s nine local primary schools aiming to develop these into after-school pay and play sessions at all schools under teaching staff supervision. Teachers will also be offered training in the basics of tennis coaching. It is hoped that the project will be funded by the Rotary Club of Abergavenny.
