PENTWYN TURNS PINK FOR BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION
11 Feb 2009
Pool goers in Pentwyn are in for a real surprise this coming Monday when they turn up for their usual half term free swim – the pool will have turned pink!
That’s right, Pentwyn Leisure Centre is holding a special ‘Pink Pool Party’ in aid of the British Heart Foundation, and will be dying the water bright pink, and holding a fund-raising fun session for children as part of the Free Swimming programme.
The Pink Pool Party will take place between the hours of 2pm and 4pm on Monday 16th February, and will include fun activities such as quizzes, walk the plank and a water disco. A collection will be made with all proceeds being donated to the British Heart Foundation.
The pool will be turned a magical pink, through use of a special transparent colourant, which over a short period of time, fades due to the chlorine in the swimming pool.
Alex Gdula, Assistant Senior Manager for Pentwyn Leisure Centre said:
"This special session will be a fun-packed event and will be a great way to keep kids occupied on a Monday afternoon during half term. It’s important that young people are aware that having a healthy lifestyle and taking part in activities like swimming contribute to a healthy heart, and we’re delighted to be supporting the British Heart Foundation and raising awareness of National Heart Month."
Pentwyn Leisure centre is able to host fun events for children during the school holidays due to funding received from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Free Swimming Improvement Fund. Through the Improvement fund, the pool has recently had a series of improvements, including a new mood lighting system for the pool and some important structure improvements.
Alun Ffred Jones AM, Minister for Heritage said:
"The Free Swimming Improvement Fund complements the Free Swimming Initiative by supporting small-scale and large-scale projects aimed at encouraging existing and new users to be more active, more often.
"We fully recognise the huge contribution that local authority leisure services make to sport and physical activity in Wales and this additional funding goes a little way in helping to encourage more regular use of the facilities."
