Cycling: Cycling

Like walking, cycling is a doorstep activity. Step out of the front door with the family in tow and set out to discover some stunning parts of the Welsh countryside. If you fancy going a little further a field you could always negotiate costal paths and cycle trails and discover all that Wales has to offer – beautiful scenery, country parks, lakes, mountains and coastline make it a captivating place to tour. Scan your local area to find a centre that hires out bikes and get pedalling!

Beach Activity:

If you fancy a kick-a-bout with your friends or family, this is a great way of burning calories – around nine per minute. Most local authorities will allow you to your dog on the beach during the winter months and running or even walking on soft sand will make your legs work like never before. The wide open space of the beach also makes it the perfect venue to fly that kite that’s been festering at the back of the shed for months on end!

Frisbee:

A perfect holiday activity for many people. Exercising everything from legs, waist, arms and shoulders, the Frisbee is a good all-round activity that will burn around 6 calories per minute at lower intensities.

Snorkelling:

You can enjoy what nature has to offer underwater by snorkelling your way around the shallows. There will still be plenty to see and you will be burning off over 6 calories a minute.

Surfing:

It’s not just confined to tropical locations! Surfer-wannabes can test out the water in one of the hundreds of beaches across Wales. With surf hire shops springing up around the Welsh coastline, why not check out the range of surfing lessons available in the area or what watersports equipment is available for hire.

Volleyball:

Volleyball is great fun and a fantastic workout for the whole body. Try beach volleyball for that extra bit of resistance!

Hiking:

A great family activity for all levels of fitness, and free! Visit the Countryside Council for Wales website for information on routes and events.

Horse Riding:

You might find four legs are better than two! Even if you’re a complete beginner, there’s a course out there for you. The Welsh countryside is dotted with horse riding stables offering lessons for people of all ages and abilities. What better way to see the Welsh landscape than on horseback!

Sailing and Windsurfing:

If the water’s your thing, lessons are available for beginners at watersports centres across Wales.

Canoeing

Canoeing:

It can be as gentle or extreme as you wish. Many canoeists enjoy it as a way of exploring the rivers and lakes of the country. It also provides a fantastic opportunity to meet new people. Guided paddles and courses are offered by activity centres across the country for all ages and abilities.

Dry Slope Skiing:

There's no need to go all the way to the Alps to put on your skis and get going. Dry slope skiing isn't very expensive, but can give you the biggest adrenalin rush.
