5x60 PUPILS TAKE THE PLUNGE WITH SWIMFIT.COM

8 Feb 2007

As a result, an initial ten-week trial has been established and dedicated Swimfit sessions will be offered twice a week during the school term. And thanks to additional funding from Kellogg’s, all pupils will have free access to www.swimfit.com, the ASA’s online swimming log which provides varied session plans for swimmers and allows users to track their progress in the pool.

British Women’s Water Polo Captain Fran Leighton was in Wrexham for the official launch where she gave some of Clywedog High School’s Year 9 pupils an introduction to her sport. Water polo is one of the extra activities to be made available at the school and 5x60 Officer Stephanie Morris also hopes to add Aquafit sessions to the programme.

"A lot of pupils already take part in swimming outside of school and so there’s a lot of interest in the sport," said Morris. "By piloting the morning swimming club, it means pupils who are busy after school still have the opportunity to swim.

"Swimfit is a great programme to keep kids active in the pool. As well as offering it to regular swimmers, we’re using it to help students that can’t swim and those with low water confidence. By following the programmes we can teach them the basics and help them progress."

If the scheme is successful, it could see more schools across Wales adopt the Swimfit poolside units as part of the 5x60 scheme.
