DEPUTY FIRST MINISTER SWINGS IN TO CLAYS GOLF CENTRE

3 Jul 2009

As part of the 24 events to highlight the 24 months of the One Wales Government, Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones swung into the record-breaking Clays Golf Centre in Wrexham to meet children and young people who have been receiving golf coaching sessions there.

Golf07The coaching sessions have been offered as part of the Sports Council for Wales’s Dragon Sport and 5x60 physical activity programmes. The 5x60 scheme is aimed at young people in secondary schools and is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government. The 5x60 name refers to the 5 sessions of 60 minutes of physical activity that it is recommended that children and young people undertake every week.

Ieuan Wyn Jones said: "A key commitment for the One Wales Government has been to continue to support physical activity schemes in schools, the 5x60 scheme has thrived on providing young people with opportunities to undertake physical activity that isn’t offered under traditional PE in schools."

"It’s been great to meet the young people taking part in the training sessions and some of the people here in Clays Golf Centre, as the local authority, Golf Development Wales and the Sports Council, involved in delivering them. With an eye to next year’s Ryder Cup, which underpins another One Wales commitment, who knows - these coaching sessions may unearth the next Ian Woosnam or Becky Brewerton!"
