POWYS’ SUPERWOMAN AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS TITLE

1 Sep 2009

Kate Preston, who works at both Newtown and Llanidloes High Schools, has been recognised by the Sports Council for Wales for her efforts to get young people fit and active.

Named 5x60 Officer of the Month for September, Kate is just one of the motivators recruited by the Sports Council for Wales’ 5x60 scheme, which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government.

Supported locally by Powys County Council, it is designed to get more secondary school pupils taking part in 60 minutes of physical activity five times a week.

The 23-year-old from Llanidloes – who played the cornet in the National Youth Brass Band of Wales when she was younger - has persuaded scores of pupils to get off the sidelines and take part in 5x60 sessions.

She has been in post for nearly two years and has introduced a vast number of extra-curricular activities in that time with dodgeball, dance and basketball proving most popular.

She explains, "I really enjoy working with young people and providing them with fun and exciting activities that they would not have the opportunity to participate in without the 5x60 project."

"Being able to offer a variety of activities to all abilities, sometimes in their lesson times, is really rewarding and helps boost their confidence when participating in extra-curricular physical activity."

Nic Davies, PE Teacher in Llanidloes High School said, "Kate is a hard working enthusiastic 5x60 Officer who has made a huge impact on the participation rate in extra-curricular activities at Llanidloes High School. She is keen to get all pupils motivated to participate by offering many different opportunities."

Delighted with the success of the programme, Chair of the Sports Council for Wales, Philip Carling, said:

"The Sports Council for Wales’ 5x60 scheme is proving successful in tempting pupils off the sidelines and into sport. Activities like cheerleading, street dance and Frisbee golf are encouraging even the most reluctant and act as a gateway to other more traditional sports and an active lifestyle."

Pupils are invited to visit www.5x60.org.uk and to nominate their officer.
